About Jacksmere Pure Breeds

Bird Flu Update.  Unfortunately due to the restrictions we made the decision to reduce the amount of poultry we breed this year         2017. If we have any poultry stock this year to sell it will be advertised in our Stock for Sale page.  We hope to back to normal year   2018.

Myself, known as Barney and Partner Tracy run a 20 acre smallholding.

We are based in West Lancashire.

Concentrating on pure and rare breed poultry. Also running two breeds of sheep, Jacobs and Ryelands. We pride ourselves on producing hardy, quality friendly stock.

We support our local poultry shows, from which we sometimes do well.

We do our bit for wildlife conservation. Planting many native trees and avoid the use of any artificial herbicides or pesticides. Trees and hedging we have planted which benefits the wildlife consist of alder, ash, beech, blackthorn, crab apple, dogwood, elder, fruit trees, hawthorn, hazel, hornbeam, horse chestnut silver birch and many willow types. Hedge cutting and tree pruning is done in January as berries have been eaten and birds are not nesting. Nothing goes to waste. Any trees that have required heavy pruning with branches over 2" thick are cut for firewood, stored inside and sold the following Winter. We grow biomass willow especially for firewood production which is chopped up for logs and kindling. Trees are coppiced every 3 years from a sustainable source. We sell cuttings and potted trees from this variety also.

We have a veg plot of which we grow broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, peas ,potatoes, spinach etc for our own use.

Due to the decline of traditional Orchards and Native fruit trees, we have recently ear marked one and a half acres for this purpose. Sixteen fruit trees have been planted out so far. Consisting of Baking Apple varieties 2 x Bramley Seedling and 2 x Howgate Wonder. . Eating Apple varieties 1 x Cox;s Orange Pippin, 1 x Discovery, 1 x James Grieve and1 x Tydemans Early. Pear varieties 2 x Conference and 2 x Williams.. Plum varieties 1 x Czar, 1 x Opal and 2 x Prunus Damson. The trees have been planted 16 feet apart with 16 feet between the rows, this gives plenty of space for trees to grow and room for mowing with a small tractor.
